Prospects of Microcrystalline Cellulose

Microcrystalline Cellulose is a natural product, so its production and application have unique advantages. In rich cellulose resources, especially fiber resources from woody plants, if basic research and exploitation of Microcrystalline Cellulose aspects can be strengthened, the resource advantages will undoubtedly transformed into the commodity advantages, thus achieving economic efficiency.

Microcrystalline cellulose has been widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, light industry, chemical industry, chemicals and other fields, and become an emerging cellulosic functional material. Currently, microcrystalline cellulose has entered the full application phase, especially the applications in the pharmaceutical industry, food industry, household chemicals and synthetic leather industry in the application have gained rapid development. As a raw material product for natural plant fibers, microcrystalline cellulose has inherent advantages and unique properties in the pharmaceutical and food industries, has become a multifunctional additive and has been applied in place of synthetic products and applications, thus opening the way to development and application of microcrystalline cellulose .

The current domestic production has mainly used cotton and wood pulp as raw materials, leading to the high cost; while the preparation of Microcrystalline Cellulose with cotton linter, straw, and sugar cane bagasse as raw materials has not yet formed large-scale industrial production. Due to the wide range of sources of raw materials, low cost, less impact on the environment, and higher economic efficiency it can create, it is a direction of the development and utilization.
