In the oil fracturing fluid, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose can provide with viscosity. And Hydroxyethyl Cellulose itself has no effect on the oil reservoir, won’t plug the oil passage and can fracture oil wells. Meanwhile, it also has the general characteristics of water-based fracturing fluid, such as the strong capability of suspended sediment, small friction and so on. The water-based fracturing fluid made with Hydroxyethyl Cellulose almost has no residue after liquefaction, and is particularly suitable for the low-permeability strata that cannot discharge the residue. Under alkaline conditions, it can form complexes with such solutions as manganese chloride, copper chloride, copper nitrate, copper sulfate and dichromate, and is specially used for carrying the fracturing fluid of proppant.
The use of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose can avoid the loss of viscosity caused by downhole high temperature, and rupture of the oil layer. It can still get good results downhole above 371 ℃.
In downhole conditions, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is not easy for spoilage, has low residue and basically will not plug the oil passage or cause downhole pollution. From a performance perspective, it is much better than commonly used gum in fracturing such as Sesbania. Phillips Petroleum has also made a comparative study of the ingredients of fracturing fluid with such cellulose ethers such as polyanionic cellulose, hydroxy ethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose and methyl cellulose, and has thought Hydroxyethyl Cellulose as the best.
After Daqing Oilfield of China has used the fracturing fluid with Hydroxyethyl Cellulose at a concentration of 0.6% as the base fluid and copper sulfate as the cross-linking agent, it is concluded that the use of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose in the fracturing fluid has two advantages compared with other natural gums. First, after well prepared, the base fluid is not easy for spoilage and can be placed for a longer time. The other advantage is low residue. And the latter is the key for Hydroxyethyl Cellulose to have been widely used for oil-well fracturing in foreign countries.
